Wearing a T-Shirt that has anything inked or embroidered on it is a very personal thing. That ink or embroidery is going to communicate something that is going to be interpreted by the world as belonging to you, and by implication, reflects something about you, your personality and your world view. So, T-Shirt quotes that resonate on shirts must embody and communicate something which you believe, or something which is a part of you.
I wear a ball cap that bears an image of a U.S. Navy FA-18 jet fighter, and the words, “Blue Angels.” While I was never in the U.S. Navy, and thus never flew for the Blue Angels, I am a pilot, and I am a big fan of the Blue Angels. This cap, however, is one of my favorites because it, more than any other wearable I own, starts conversations. People’s first question is always, “Did you fly for the Blue Angels?”
I always am honest and say, “No. I never had the honor.” But the conversation has started, and we end up talking about flying, air shows or similar. Occasionally I find I’m talking to another pilot, and we will have a wonderful conversation about the airplanes we’ve flown, and other stories. Sometimes those random conversations with other pilots are the best part of my day.
The point is, what you wear is personal to you, and the messages on your apparel should be things that you believe or relate to. My wife sews quilts for the pure joy of doing so, but I would never wear a quilting T-Shirt because it’s not something I care about enough to wear. She, on the other hand, has eight quilting T-Shirts.
Next week, we will get more specific about what messages to wear, and what messages not to wear.
